What do I do first in an emergency situation?

Many of us have asked the question, "If a real emergency happens what should I do?"  In one way there are some basic things to keep in mind.  In another way, because of the variety of possible emergency situations, things can get complicated very quickly --  especially because most of us have limited experience in emergency situations.

I'll mention a few things that come to my mind in an informal way with regard to our situation in the Logan Bishop's Storehouse area.

First, at the outset of an emergency situation there is the need to become informed by both you as ward and stake communication specialists and us who have responsibility for operating the Bishop's Storehouse ERC Net.  If you become aware of an emergency situation that you feel may involve the operation of this net, please contact Phil (N7JFG), Rick (K7YPR), or Dave (KF7ZZ).  One of us will most likely be monitoring this frequency and other simplex and repeater frequencies covering this area.  If other means of communication are available such as telephone, e-mail, or text messaging they may be used.  For example, a text message may get through even though voice phone systems may be overloaded.

If or when Phil, Rick, or Dave becomes aware of an emergency situation (from whatever source) we will be available on the ERC Net frequency -- 146.420 MHz simplex -- as soon as possible.  You may also want to check the Utah North ERC Net frequencies of 145.590 MHz simplex, 3.960 MHz (Phone), and 3.573 MHz (CW).  ERC nets on these frequencies are managed from the Ogden Bishop's Storehouse.

There are several important things to remember at the outset of an emergency.
First, remember that family is first.  Before becoming involved in emergency communications be sure you have made all necessary arrangements for the security, safety, and general well being of your family and home.

Second, remember that the purpose of the Bishop's Storehouse ERC Net is to provide priesthood leader communication primarily concerned with members, missionaries, and meeting houses -- these are the three M's of church emergency communications.  Bishop's Storehouse ERC Nets are not intended to replace ARES or other emergency nets.

Thanks for your willingness to be involved and prepared!
